Whether you’re an Excel beginner or someone who has been using the program daily for the past decade, we believe there’s always something you can learn — a tip or three that you didn’t know can make all the difference. 

In fact, this belief is such a fundamental part of who we are as a business that we even have a page dedicated to sharing Excel tips with our audience. Looking back at 2023 as the year closed, we thought to remind you of our top 3 most popular and helpful tips shared over the last year. 

Excel Tip 1: Copy and Paste with Column Widths

Computers and other computer-like technologies would not be the same without the ability to copy-paste content. Our lives are certainly made easier by this little shortcut. But when used in Excel, the default ctrl + c (⌘ + c on Mac), ctrl + v (⌘ + v on Mac) copies everything, but column widths. Meaning that if you’re duplicating large amounts of content, you’ll have to manually adjust each column you’ve copied. 

We have a simple solution. Once your content is pasted, click “paste options” and select “keep source column width”. An even quicker fix is to use the keyboard shortcut ctrl + w (^ + ⌘ + v on Mac). 

Excel Tip 2: Quickest Way to Select & Delete Empty Rows

Importing data received from third-party systems often results in many empty rows and cells. Finding and removing these empty rows can time consuming. We have the simplest solution for this:

Select a column that you want to remove empty cells and rows from then press F5 (Fn + F5 on Mac) to call up the Go To, and click on “Special” in the bottom left corner. Then select Blanks and click OK. Finally, press ctrl + – (⌘ + – on Mac) to delete, and select “Entire row” followed by OK. 

And just like that, every empty row in your Excel document is gone. 

Excel Tip 3: Quickest Way to Duplicate Your Worksheet in Excel

There’s a simple rule of thumb: dragging and dropping an item will move it; dragging while holding down ctrl (^ on Mac) – sometimes labeled ‘control’ on your keyboard – will create a copy of said item. 

This works within Excel as well. Making it the easiest way to duplicate a worksheet. If you drag and drop a sheet tab it simply changes position, but if you drag and drop whilst holding down your ctrl (^ on Mac) button, you are able to duplicate a worksheet. This works across Workbooks as well, meaning you can easily copy and paste a worksheet from one workbook to another.
